Cinema Paradiso (Cinema Paradiso, in English) – 4 stars (Excellent)
In my search for movies that are not well known but have a great story, with excellent presentation, I discovered "Cinema Paradiso" by Giuseppe Tornatore, Italian director.
Tornatore intended the film to be an obituary for traditional theaters (like Paradise Film) and the film industry in general, but after reviewing the film and box office success, he changed his mind and apparently never publicly mentioned the demise of the movie again.
Many critics credit Cinema Paradiso with reviving the film industry in Italy, which later produce "Mediterraneo" and "Life is beautiful." Tornatore deserves even more than his work as director, also wrote the story and script with the help of some Vanna Paoli.
Giuseppe Tornatore joins a very select group of writer / Directors who were able to create great films in a double role. Most writers and directors fail miserably in their efforts. I raise the same Tornatore Tim McCanlies level in "Secondhand Lions" and Kirk Jones waking Ned Devine ", both excellent photos. It takes more courage to create an excellent film, is also immense talent, heart, sensitivity and maturity.
So successful was Cinema Paradiso? Among his 19 wins and 12 nominations for excellence was the Oscar for best foreign language film Oscar, Best Foreign Film Golden Globe and Grand Jury Prize at Cannes.
Cinema Paradiso will capture your heart when you see 6 years Salvatore "Toto" Di Vita (played by Salvatore Cascio) captivated by the local cinema in his small hometown in Sicily. Misses least his father, who became the second World War Victim, and by the cunning and a high level of interest, satisfies the cinema projectionist Alfredo (Philippe Noiret) to mentor him.
There are three "Toto" in the filmthe younger (Salvatore Cascio), the teenager (Marco Leonardi) and adult (Jacques Perrin). Perrin is a film producer in real life. Cascio steals every scene is amazing with his facial expressions, inquisitive mind and indomitable determination to learn to be a projectionist.
Along the way it goes in a lot of difficulties. Lost the confidence of his mother for spending money given to buy bread for the whole family at a price of admission to see a movie in the theater. Disadvantages is Alfredo, the projectionist making a film and cause a fire in your house and threatening the life of her sister. Cause Alfredo to break his promise Toto's mother that we will not stand projectionist Toto.
Ultimately, the film also flammable and a fire destroys the Cinema Paradiso and, in a heinous act, Toto saves Alfredo Alfredo's life but loses seen in the disaster. After that Paradise is being rebuilt as the Nuovo Cinema Paradiso (New Cinema Paradise), Toto, who has learned to be a projectionist, is hired as a child to do so because it is the only one in town known.
The bond between Alfredo as a surrogate father to Toto deeper when Toto enters his teenage years. Alfredo will be sought for advice about life when he falls for the beautiful Elena (Agnese Nano), who comes from a wealthy family and entry into a forbidden relationship with Toto.
Alfredo encourage Toto leave her village for Rome and never return, if taken seriously his career in the film industry. Toto eventually grow to become a famous film producer Rome.
Cinema Paradiso starts when Toto learns her beloved Alfredo has died. Toto was not returned to his village and visit his mother and sister of 30 years. The question is: Is it back to the funeral? After returning to live his life in flashbacks during a sleepless night, boarded a plane to return home to find it again. The full story is too good to be here much longer.
Cinema Paradiso is about relationships. The relationship between a mother her child, a foster parent for a child, a boy with a girl, a novel of youth, the citizens of a theater town, and between generations among the villagers.
Release Cinema Paradiso in 1988 proves the adage if success was easy to make each film hailed by critics and it would be a success at the box office. Version Italian original was 155 minutes (2 hours, 35 minutes) and had a poor response. After shortening the film to 123 minutes (2 hours, 3 minutes), became a success immediately.
I saw the 123 minutes version was released in the U.S. and disappointed me was that there was no indication of what ultimately happened in relation with Toto Elena. I have since learned that the director Giuseppe Tornatore released a 173-minutes (2 hours, 53 minutes) in 2002, which contains exactly what I wanted to see. Search and see the long version, if it can be added to the already excellent film.
