Movies To Ipod

Is it possible to put DVDs on iPod with video?
I have a 80GB iPod with video and I'm young enough to not have enough saving money on expensive movies from iTunes. I wondered how I could get my own movies on it? People have told me they were able to do so, and certainly is always a way, but that's what I know which way? Should I buy software? Because that would be zero. Whatever the case, please help!
Yes, you need software. Most software you buy in stores will not let you tear film. Most are films you want to put on your iPod. There are ways to avoid this, but is illegal in the United States.
