Cinema Sewer 2

Satellite TV is Your Ticket to the Craziest Asian Flicks Around
In all honesty, it is kind of difficult to watch a foreign film. Now, that is not to say that sitting through one and reading the subtitles is difficult, but actually finding one playing in the cinemas or on HD movie channels can be kind of tricky. Granted, a few manage to infiltrate the domestic market, but unless a film is nominated for an Academy Award for best foreign film, there is really no chance for European or Asian movies to reach American audiences.
Luckily, for any person interested in exposing him or herself to a little foreign movie culture, cable and satellite TV packages offer subscribers with a random selection of channels that specialize in foreign programming. And although there are numerous, amazing European flicks, there are really no crazier movies than those that come out of Asia.
So, for the fans of excessive violence, crazy endings and just good old-fashioned entertainment, here is a list of a few must-see films from Asia that are currently playing on cable and satellite TV.
“Battle Royale” – It is the beginning of the 21st century in Japan. The economy is in the toilet, employment is at an all time high and juvenile delinquency is rampant. Since the youth no longer trust the adults or retain any respect for them, they act out and disobey everything that they are asked to do. Because of this, the government passes the battle royal act as a means of defense against the youth. Following 42 students of a 9th grade class, the film shows what happens to kids who unfortunately become victims of the act. They are kidnapped, transported to an abandoned island, given food, water, a map and a random weapon. From there, they have three days to kill or be killed. Only one person can leave the island at the end of the three days; if more than one person is alive, the radio collars on their necks will explode. Therefore, let the mayhem ensue.
“Oldboy” – Ho Dae-su, an average man in South Korea, is kidnapped and imprisoned without any explanation for 15 years. No one talks to him, he is fed the same food daily and he becomes the prime suspect for his wife’s murder while in his cell. Then, suddenly, he is released. With money, clothes and a phone, Dae-Su goes on a revenge quest trying to find out who kidnapped him and why it happened in the first place. As the story unfolds, the violence continues to occur until the most shocking, twisted and ridiculous ending to ever occur on film arrives. Not to mention that one fight scene in the film, a continuous shot, is by far one of the best fight scenes that can be found on cable and satellite TV today. “Oldboy” is one of the only films on this list that could be found playing on high definition movie channels even though it did not win any awards. It is truly messed up.
“The Host” – Released in 2006, “The Host,” is not just a normal monster movie. It is an Asian monster movie – better than “Godzilla” – that features good acting, occasional humor and some pretty darn good special effects. A few years after toxic chemicals are released into the Han River, a giant squid-like monster lurches out of the water, attacking all the people who reside by the side of the river and taking a local teenager with it as it flees. While the teenager’s family grieves, they receive a call from her informing them that she is alive and stuck in some sort of sewer area. Although quarantined by the military, the family works together to escape the military base and go rescue their loved one.
