Do I need an optical output point in a home theater system to connect to my Sky HD Box?

I recommend using an optical cable. This allows you to enjoy any signals encoded surround sound current (assuming which has an amplifier and five speakers or more). Drink a glass Toslink cable, which are better than plastic Toslink (wide bandwidth). Check E-bay for cheap Toslink glass cables.
