best actress
Why did Hattie McDaniel win best supporting actress in GWTW in 1939 insteqd of Olivia de Havilland?

The character Melana, played by deHavilland, was a much more prevalent character than “Mammie” in Gone With the Wind, yet Hattie McDaniel got best supporting actress. I’ve never had anybody tell me how or why this happened.

Because she brought genuine drama to a stock characterization and transcended racial stereotypes in a stereotypical role in a film filled with stereotypes.
